Another type of equipment that uses some special rules is the Costume. 

While it might offer stat bonuses like other equipment, the main appeal of a Costume is that it replaces the appearance of some or all of your character’s equipped armor. Some Costumes make your character appear as though they are wearing the entire collection of a particular armor set, others create unique appearances that no available equipment can match. There are dozens of Costumes available, with some very interesting looks to them. 

If you have a Costume with stats you like, but don’t care for the appearance of, you can disable Costume display under the Options menu. You’ll still receive the Costume’s stat bonuses and effects, but it won’t affect the way your character looks. 

The Costume equipment slot is located on the Inventory screen, under the Costume tab. You can equip two Costumes at once, but you’ll only have the appearance and equipment bonuses from one at a time. You can switch between them with Shift+TAB. 

If you enjoy changing your look often, you’ll likely appreciate the Costume Closet, which can store up to 12 additional Costumes. The Costume Closet is accessible via the yellow arrow on the right side of the Costume tab. 

"New Type" Costumes and Crests 

The functionality of Costumes was changed some time ago, with the addition of Crests. Only Costumes introduced after this point can use Crests, and they are distinguished by having “New Type” in their name. 

Crests are a special type of item that work similarly to Socket Stones – they grant stat bonuses, and they must be placed into New Type Costumes in order to have any effect. Unlike other items, Costumes always have the same number of Crest slots available (six), which cannot be changed. Crests are also limited by color – each Costume can hold one Orange and one Purple Crest, and two Green and two Blue Crests. 

Also unlike Socket Stones, you must have Crests added to your costume by blacksmiths, who charge DIL for the procedure. Talk to the blacksmith and select the [Costume] dialogue option to see the Crest System screen. Select the Crests you’d like added, and click Apply. 

Crests can be removed from New Type Costumes, but unlick socket stones, they are not always lost when extracted. Blacksmiths can attempt to remove Crests for you, via the Extract a Crest tab. Select the Crest you’d like removed and pay the fee. The Crest will always be removed, but there is a chance of losing the Crest when doing so, which changes depending on the Crest’s color. If you use Pliers when removing Crests, you are guaranteed to keep the Crest upon extraction. Hot Pliers let you remove and keep all Crests at once. Both types of Pliers are rare, and found in miscellaneous places in the world.
